How to hold these companies responsible? We have to develop new, renewable energy sources, and the existing companies have to contribute to the process- How?
Sue from WA
I think the reason the oil is not stopped is they want to continue to retrieve that oil and not lose it for themselves. They are worried about still getting it and getting their money, not saving the water or our coastline. I think this needs to be treated as a terrorist attack as we would if someone invaded our coast line (which they did). No more drilling allowed if they have no solution in line. They were saved under Bush admin $500,000 by not having to put in the "plug". Well, it will cost them a hell of a lot more now. I think with this delay they are making people angry to get the government to take over which means we will pay for their error. Is that their plan? People are crying for the government to take over, well are you aware that that means we bail out BP and take over the cost? BS. BP must bear the burden.

When I listen to debates from both Progressives and Conservatives, I seem to find good intentions coming from each of these divergent perspectives. How do I find a constructive center viewpoint to promote real changes rather than just a continuation of adversarial arguments?

I have an increasing awareness of the ecological problems we all face-water supply, pollution, global warming, etc. I have little or no faith in our current government or capitalist system. What can I do to affect change? I am unemployed and have very limited resources.

10% of the work force are nurses. The average nurse is a 50 yo woman. How do we galvanize them into some sort of cohesive action? Taking the proceeds of medical marijuana production and using it to support local organic foods would work for me. I think nurses could take the stand--first good food, not big pharma drugs.

I am trying to make a difference here in my small community concerning the noise pollution coming from the train yard across the main road and trying to do something about the speed limit of 25 miles an hour on all our roads being inforced. Type your question in here As I listen to the news about the oil catastrophe in the Gulf, I feel that no one has the answer to this. Therefore, no oil company has the right to drill for oil in our oceans unless they PROVE, WITHOUT A DOUBT, that they have the technology to avoid these disasters.
Teresa Bessett from WA
Hello Mr. Loeb, I have been an activist since I was a child but I am having a terrible time wrapping my head around the governments reasoning in awarding federal contracts and grants to oil companies who consistently net billions of dollars every year, no matter the economic climate. This catastrophe, though possibly the largest, is merely one of many, and will continue unless we decided otherwise. These disasters are a much needed wake up call, if we would only listen. Thank you for your time, but more importantly for who you are and what you do. I will be reading your book.

. What would happen if the goverment said that they want to Nationalize the OIL INDUSTRY? How fast would BP clean up the oil spil? We must get off of using OIL and use alternative energy.
Sharon from TX
How can we promote and encourage further alternative energy development in our own states without having to wait for the slow wheels of government? I honestly believe if we wait for politicians the human race will become extinct.
Christine from OH
How can we get the Fed to step up and take charge of this unnatural disaster now - while still ensuring that BP will foot the bill?

Stepping back and looking at all of our-empire-is-collapsing problems from the satellite view for a moment, it seems obvious that many of the most vital structural supports for our civilization (energy, agriculture, finance, etc.) are ready to collapse completely. No matter what is done by government or business to try to fix this mess, we will be left to preserve and rebuild our civilization and culture without their help. How should an activist and survivor adapt their "we can change this" philosophy when faced with worst case crisis scenarios?
Anita from CA
I am feeling overwhelmed! In Imperial county we have so many environmental issues affecting our communities. Our elected officials support projects that devastate our fragile desert ecosystem. Wind Zero, a dump place in West Morland, the New River, the list is huge, What can we do? Only a few of us care about what is really happening! By the way, we are still having many earthquakes......

Gandi opined that if everyone only did the little bit they could, it would be enough. There are so many imponderable problems many feel confounded. It occurs to me that all the great problems may be thought of as consequences of living beyond our means. If you accept this, then what to do is greatly simplified. I suggest that an assault in waste, with fife and drum would be rather fun. What do you think?

Type your question in here The horrible spill in the Gulf and the prices of oil by the barrel and gasoline at the pump are not related. The spill is pumping millions and millions of barrels of oil out as we speak ...... wasting it ....... whereas the price of gasoline at the pump is declining. BP voluntarily took full responsibility for the disaster and its financial consequences. Why are Obama, Salazar and Napolitano wasting their time on this matter? .... the federal government is powerless and its engineers and creative thinkers are no better than the professionals at BP and Transocean. The Obama administration has no solutions to recommend, right?

I heard that BP can stop the oil spill but doing so would mean they could not extract the remaining oil. Is it true that BP is only exploring ways to stop the spill that will allow them to have access to the remaining oil? If so, what does this say about the Obama Administration? I have copied the 3 best Qs from the list already asked: 1.Would we not be considering it an act of war if that leaking oil well belonged to Iran, Russia or Venezuela? Would we not be calling it a terrorist act if that oil well did indeed belong to one of the fore mentioned countries? 2. How could we organize a citizens movement to revoke the corporate charters of organizations involved in envronmentally destructive companies? is punishment of corporate personhood - even a corporate death penalty a moral line of pursuit? 3.I am often left breathless when John Q. Citizen is captured on TV regurgitating some blatant drivel that has been put out in the public arena, whether it be by the media or the government or the PR department of some corporation. "How can he be so shortsighted, so gullible and so uncritical in his thinking," I cry. Then I see children mimic the beliefs and attitudes of their parents. And it occurs to me that change starts on a very personal level. If we expect the powers that be to be accountable for the consequences of their actions, we need to model being moral, responsible citizens in our homes, our workplaces, and our communities. If we choose to be weasles and whiners, we have no right to expect more of our leaders.

Since big corporations and the big governments they control are so greedy, insensitive, irresponsible and unresponsive to the common practical concerns of most citizens who lack the financial resources needed to compete with them and to institute common sense policies and practices, who is providing financial support that would enable local community initiatives to establish and develop self-sufficient, sustainable economies that are independent of the unsustainable globalized system?

It is the result of politicians being influenced by lobbists, poor regulation, and Enron like corporate tactics. Further what do you propose to make the news media more independent from corporate influences such as that from BP?
